Albany’s Ongoing Efforts to Combat Climate Change

Albany is actively implementing initiatives to address climate change, focusing on sustainability and environmental resilience.

Act Now Albany Initiative

The city has launched the ‘Act Now Albany’ plan, aiming to unite residents and officials in creating a new Climate Action Plan. This plan includes a Climate Vulnerability Assessment and strategies for both city operations and the community. Efforts under this initiative include switching to 100% renewable energy for municipal operations, installing EV chargers citywide, and investing in geothermal heating at affordable housing sites.

Beaver Creek Clean River Project

Another significant endeavor is the Beaver Creek Clean River Project, designed to enhance water quality in the Hudson River. This project will screen and disinfect up to 300 million gallons annually of sewage overflow from the Beaver Creek line, a major pollution source in the Hudson. Additionally, it aims to mitigate flooding risks, thereby improving the city’s overall quality of life and the river’s ecological system.

University at Albany’s Decarbonization Efforts

The University at Albany has initiated a $30 million decarbonization project to reduce its fossil fuel consumption. This project involves replacing gas-fired absorption chillers with high-efficiency electric centrifugal and heat recovery chillers connected to a new geothermal well field. These efforts align with New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which mandates an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Community Air Quality Monitoring

In collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the University at Albany is leading community air quality monitoring projects. These projects aim to measure and reduce exposure to air pollutants affecting public health, particularly in underserved neighborhoods. The data collected will help estimate residents’ exposure to air pollution and suggest ways to improve air quality.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Albany demonstrates a strong commitment to combating climate change and fostering a sustainable future for its residents.
