Empowering Albany’s Entrepreneurs: Resources and Initiatives Fueling Local Business Growth

Albany, New York, has long been a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. A variety of programs and initiatives are available to support local businesses and startups, fostering economic growth and community development.

University at Albany’s Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programs

The University at Albany (UAlbany) offers comprehensive support for technology startups through its Office of Technology Transfer and Office of Economic Development, Entrepreneurship, and Industry Partnerships. These programs provide mentorship, protect intellectual property, and assist in commercializing innovations. Notably, the Innovation Center offers affordable space and industry connections for tech startups, while the Research & Innovators Startup Exchange (RISE) connects researchers and students to create startups that bring research-driven innovations to the market. Additionally, UAlbany participates in the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps (NSF I-Corps), offering training and guidance to entrepreneurs looking to progress existing scientific or engineering research into viable business ventures.

Center for Economic Growth (CEG)

The Center for Economic Growth (CEG) leads collaborative efforts with regional businesses, institutions, incubators, universities, and investors to develop a seamless entrepreneurship pipeline supporting high-growth technology and manufacturing startups in the Capital Region. CEG provides entrepreneurship support by collaborating with ecosystem partners to create opportunities for entrepreneurs to refine their pitches, introducing entrepreneurs to prototyping opportunities, connecting them to seed funding and mentoring resources, and improving access to labs, office space, and other facilities.

Innovate 518

Innovate 518, the Capital Region’s Innovation Hot Spot, is a collaborative effort of business incubators expanding entrepreneurial services, helping startups, and supporting economic development in the Capital Region. Led by the University at Albany, Innovate 518 connects startups to UAlbany’s vast resources, including student talent, faculty expertise, entrepreneurial support programs, and world-class facilities.

City of Albany’s Economic Development Efforts

The City of Albany has been proactive in fostering economic development. In the past decade, efforts have brought more than $9 billion of investment to the city. Downtown Albany has experienced a renaissance with new residential units, the expansion and updating of premier entertainment destinations, and new world-class dining locations. The city’s diverse neighborhoods are being revitalized, from the Hudson River waterfront to Albany’s Pine Bush Preserve.

Governor Hochul’s Downtown Albany Strategy

In February 2026, Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled the Downtown Albany Strategy, a comprehensive, community-informed revitalization plan that is part of the $400 million Championing Albany’s Potential (CAP) Initiative. The strategy is backed by $200 million in public investments from New York State to guide coordinated action that will spur housing growth, create jobs, promote long-term redevelopment, enliven commercial corridors, and energize the public realm.

These initiatives and resources collectively contribute to a robust support system for entrepreneurs and small businesses in Albany, fostering a vibrant and resilient local economy.
